Homemade Bread and Butter Pickles

Why Make This Recipe

Bread and Butter Pickles are a classic condiment that adds a sweet and tangy flavor to your meals. They are simple to make and use fresh cucumbers, making them perfect for summer when cucumbers are in season. These pickles are not only delicious but also a great way to preserve cucumbers for later use. Whether you want to enjoy them on sandwiches, burgers, or as a snack, this recipe is sure to impress!

How to Make Bread and Butter Pickles

Ingredients:

  • 3 pounds crisp cucumbers, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt (or sea salt)
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Directions:

  1. Place the cucumbers and onions in a colander resting in a large bowl or in the sink. Toss with the salt and let them stand for 1-2 hours. This will help release a lot of water from the cucumbers.
  2. After the time is up, rinse the salt off the cucumbers and onions using cold water. Lay them in a single layer on a couple of sheet pans lined with paper towels. Cover with another layer of paper towels and let them dry overnight.
  3. The next day, combine the vinegar, water, sugar, mustard seeds, celery seeds, and turmeric in a large saucepan. Heat this mixture until it boils, cooking until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then, remove it from heat.
  4. Pack your sterilized canning jars with the cucumbers and onions, leaving about 1/2-inch space at the top. Pour the warm vinegar mixture over the cucumbers and onions to fill the jars. Seal the jars according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Since these pickles are stored in the fridge, you don’t need a hot water bath. Just turn the jars upside down for about 15-20 minutes for the hot liquid to touch the inside of the lid. Then, flip them right-side up and let them cool. The lids will pop down when sealed.
  5. Store in the refrigerator and let them sit for several days before opening to let the flavors develop. They are best served chilled.
